another hoard found in JERSEY C.I !!
http://www.thisisjersey.com/news/2012/1 ... ard-found/
A SECOND cache of ancient treasure has been earthed in a Jersey field – just months after the largest hoard of Celtic coins ever found was discovered in Grouville.
Metal detectorists found the 3,000-year-old Bronze Age hoard this week lying 30 cm down in a secret location.

The pot has at least 4 other axe heads in it and we are waiting to see on the xray what else is in there.
whilst not as exciting as 70,000 coins and gold torques etc, as my first hoard for me it was still a heart stopper.

The Archeoligist says they will xray the pot this week to see what else is in there, if there are no surprises they will expose the contents.

Not positive how many yet as Neil the conservator said he found another two below the 2nd layer, but I will count them when he lets me visit I think 23-25
They are now commenting on the high lead content possibly 55% which if right makes them pretty usless as tools but I think better as weapons, as the added weight would help. what do you all think?

Re: another hoard found in JERSEY C.I !!
Reminds me of hoards found in Brittany (Vanne museum) that I've seen. Copper axes with a high quantity of lead, believed to be either for gift exchange or for votive rituals, hence the large amount of lead. Interesting that the channel islands were seen as a stopping off point between the coast of France and possibly places like Hengistbury Head which saw use from the Stone Age because of its natural port and its access to inland Britain up the river system. Your axes being later Bronze Age being socketed and looped.
These types of hoards are giving us a much better understanding of how people related to each other either side of the channel. Although it tends to be a 'them and us' situation these days (culturally different), back in the Bronze Age it was very different with trade and exchange thought to be much more common. What would be interesting would be to have the metal analysed to see where the bronze was sourced? Possibly north Wales, or even southern Ireland, or of course continental???
Well done again.
