Re: Viking treasure found in Dumfries and Galloway
It was definitely not found in a graveyard. The Church owns fields which were used in the past to support the minister. The pot is being conserved, but for archaeologists it is a tricky decision - it is much rarer to find the textile, so do they conserve it with the textile in place, or remove the textille to reveal the decoration on the pot? For people who just like looking at pretty things the answer may be obvious, but on a more technical and intellectual level it would be truer to leave the textile in situ. The vessel is also stuffed with finds, including silver brooches - it has to be x-rayed and CT-scanned so that the conservators can decide on the correct approach to removing the contents, so this hoard hasn't stopped giving yet.
