600 year old ring found in Somerset field sold....

Post by PhilD »

A 600-year-old gold ring found in a Somerset farmer's field has sold at auction for thousands over its guide price. The rare Saint George ring has gone under the hammer for £7,000, double what it was valued at. Experts believe it belonged to a nobleman from the early 16th century....................

We live in hope Phil :g58: Hopefully there is one similar lurking in a field in Devon as well :g49:

What a cracking find though :g50:

Another piece of history saved by a detectorist :g38:

:shock: WOW another stunner :g58:

The nearest I have come is with the gold ring below found last year which recently came back from the BM (treasure process) but only to say it is not classed as treasure as they cannot say when it was made and it may have even been a mount for a stone as the inside is concave, although there are no obvious marks where attachments for the mount would have been - strange one.
I was hoping it was going to be identified as Medieval but they had nothing similar to compare it with at the BM.

Very odd, looks like the marks were deliberately put there.

Yes it has small crescents all along the outside edge, which were stamped in by hand as a design.

I'm probably way off mark here but this one on PAS has crescents in line;

Yes I have to agree with you Phil the crescent markings are similar but my ring has been seen by the 'Experts' at the BM who deemed it to be post Medieval and not 'Treasure'. I have include excerpts from the letter from the BM to the Coroner and the report on the ring from the BM.
