Farmers Guardian Latest News

Post by PhilD »

With the coronavirus continuing to affect this summer’s farming calendar and numerous events being cancelled, companies and organisations are looking at alternative ways of communicating their crop trials results and advice.

Quite a number are planning virtual trials including videos of trial plots and opportunities for growers to engage using online platforms.

The recent dry spell has enabled growers to plant many more acres than they might have believed back in early March and recent rains are welcome for many, albeit that a close eye on pests and diseases will be needed.

On the horticulture side of things, it is still proving difficult to get sufficient labour and concerns remain about what impact this could have on fruit and vegetable harvests.

It is sad to hear the news that AHDB’s Sutton Bridge Crop Research facility is under threat, with it having conducted research for many years to inform potato industry decisions regarding storage. There are concerns among growers and in the industry that the quality of research into this important area may suffer.

Amid continuing difficult times for growers both in terms of making decisions regarding crop inputs for winter crops that are below par and disruption caused by coronavirus, it is welcome news that farm businesses will be able to claim Government backed loans of up to £50,000 with no repayments or interest for the first 12 months.

Stay safe.

Update 24/07/20;

Impact of turbulent weather on yields coming to light as harvest rumbles on

As harvest continues throughout the county, winter barley yields are not looking as badly affected by 2019/20’s adverse weather patterns as some had feared, but oilseed rape yields have suffered.

A handful of growers have started wheat harvest, but with wheat area down 25 per cent on last year and challenging weather expected to have impacted yield and quality, what this means for 2020 tonnage is yet to be known.

For potato growers, as the first year without the use of chlorpropham to control sprouting, many are gearing up to use maleic hydrazide for the first time. Organic growers received good news this month as a new blight fungicide was given emergency approval.

In sugar beet, the picture is less positive with concerns mounting over the impact of virus yellows on the future viability of the crop after it was reported some crops have unprecedented infection levels.

As Brexit negotiations rumble on, there has been concern over the independence of the new Trade and Agriculture Commission after it was revealed its press operation will be carried out by officials at the Department for International Trade. Meanwhile, the food service industry was urged to pledge its support over food standards as the UK prepares to sign trade deals with several countries, including the USA.

September update;

Rocky road continues for arable farmers

While weather is currently looking ideal for autumn cultivations and plantings, not to mention any harvesting remaining to be done, the challenges of 2020 are not over yet.

Although some growers are able to take advantage of seed not used in the 2019/20 growing season, for those needing to top up, popular wheat varieties and winter beans, especially could be difficult to get hold of given below par yield and quality of seed in some areas.

For those unable to get hold of winter bean seed, although not ideal, sowing spring beans in the winter bean slot is an option providing the right agronomy is followed.

Growers lucky enough to get oilseed rape in early have seen crops thrive better than they have in recent seasons, however, the threat of CSFB remains and a significant number of growers report dropping the crop from their rotations for the 2020/21 season.

Break crop choice remains a difficult issue and for those able to grow sugar beet, recent prices announced for next season are disappointing but probably to be expected in the face of global competition. Many have seen their crops severely infected by virus yellows this season so a degree of insurance in the beet contract is welcome but it is becoming a more risky crop to grow.

The outcome of Brexit trade deal negotiations also remains a risky prospect with many growers’ questions waiting to be answered. Potato seed and ware exports from the UK could be interrupted in a Brexit no deal scenario and there are signs that seed potato growers are looking to export potatoes before the transition period ends on December 31.

Update 16th October 2020;

Price volatility, political uncertainty and agronomic issues spell bumpy road ahead

It has been quite a month for arable farmers. While they dodged the showers to progress with drilling, news came in that the amendment to the Agriculture Bill which would have banned low-standard food imports had been rejected.

Prospects of striking a trade deal with Europe also remain uncertain, a factor influencing grain markets which are likely to be volatile in the weeks and months ahead with the continued disruptions from Covid-19, the US election and a La Nina weather event all adding to uncertainty.

Although oilseed rape crops that went in early seem to be doing well in the main, many farmers preferred not to take the risk and have, instead, decided to grow linseed as a break crop. It will be interesting to see how they get on with what will be a new crop for many.

It has been a difficult year for sugar beet growers, with virus yellows devastating crops in some areas so it is rather difficult for UK growers to accept that France is in the process of voting to bring back neonicotinoid seed treatments after previously being so active in pushing for a ban. UK growers deserve a level playing field and the effect of virus yellows on this year’s crop should be brought to the Government’s attention as a matter of urgency.
