Disappointing to read such a negative piece when there is so much to be proud of as regards our hobby. You only have to look at the hundreds of finds reported and logged on PAS to see that these thieves using metal detectors are a minuscule minority of a hobby that has, more than any other means, massively contributed to our knowledge of the past.
The media are quick to seize on these rare and damaging crimes, but they do not represent in any way the huge positive impact that our hobby has had on our understanding of the past.

Professionally aimless wandering.

It's only a few that let our hobby down, those that do it are in for the money and not as a hobby. Crime in our hobby doesn't pay and those who get caught with stolen property/finds will be dealt with under the law. They are fools if they think their crimes will not be "detected" or they will not be caught.

Re: ....when metal detectorist go rogue
I was one of those who was detecting back in the 1970's when a 'pipe finders licence' as it was then called was required to detect legally. This was finally dropped when the radio licence was abolished from memory. I personally can't see the point in re introducing it as the rouges who detect illegally will still do it anyway!!

Re: ....when metal detectorist go rogue
again, very sad when you consider that well over 90% of all treasure finds, yearly, are from metal detectorists. fully reported and declared.
Embrace the sadness with a smile, and keep on swinging!
