hundreds of pre-Revolution gold coins dug out of the walls of a remote French château fetched more than €1 million at auction yesterday.

The family who own the home held on to four coins as keepsakes, putting the remaining 235 up for auction in the western town of Angers. The auctioneers Ivoire/Deloys had put an estimate of €250,000-€300,000 on the gold, which dates from between 1638 and 1692.
