All those "Expert" Arkies on site telling us how old and who's hand made a certain type of pot and what it would have looked like back in it's day....they find a nice sized gold coin and they have to send it to a specialist???? strange.

And from the point of view of a 'proper' archaeologist its not the greatest thing they have ever found - its a gold coin, it tells us that someone with a fair bit of cash was there sometime after the date of the coin, it may tell us a bit about the status of the site but it doesn't actually add anything much more than a grotty bronze or tattered cut hammy would have done - Tony the Treasure Hunter! TR, you have just shot yourself in the foot with your effusive comments!!!

And really that's all it tells us, someone was there and dropped a coin.m300572 wrote:....... its a gold coin, it tells us that someone with a fair bit of cash was there sometime after the date of the coin.......
Assuming it was an isolated find made in the topsoil.
Different though if it was found in a secure context, along with some datable pottery of other artefacts ?

I dont know if you carried on reading after the article to the comments folk had made- Interesting one from the man in Germany a similat outfit to TT had dug out tons of spoil and by chance a detectorist scanned it a few weeks late and apparantly discovered TWO gold coin hoards- makes you wonder if these people realise that JCB are perhaps not the best way to go about excavation- thats the trouble with rushing in three days - probably two days if you take in all the hot air and procrastinating on where to dig!
I can well understand that if they spend their entire working life looking at pottery sherds and mud the TT experts may not feel up to coin identification. We can (almost) all identify a Noble but exactly which ruler and which issue is a specialist task. Fortunately we have some damn good specialists on this forum. I just hope that it doesn't turn out to be a double leopard cos it will be our turn to have egg on our faces!mark@3counties wrote:All those "Expert" Arkies on site telling us how old and who's hand made a certain type of pot and what it would have looked like back in it's day....they find a nice sized gold coin and they have to send it to a specialist???? strange.
Time Team
I am the other detectorist that was on the dig and had to work another area It was identified as a gold noble of Henry VI in EF and will post pics of the coin but I think it may be Henry V coin
All I could manage was a hammered of Alexander III, a Nuremburg Jetton, Musket Ball plus loads of lead
