A Gold coin found by a detectorist, working on a Time Team dig, described by Tony Robinson as, "Possibly the biggest find in the history of the Time Team"

That has somewhat annoyed me. the greatest discovery made by time team is the discovery of the veiwers to archaeology in their living rooms.
The programme may have caused angst with some detectorists but it has brought the past to life in an easy to understand non-text book format.
It is a gold coin that is all........... Think of all the other finds and discoveries that have been found on the programme. I am sure that some of the sites they have discovered is more important than a single coin..............

Perfectly true, but the average viewer wants to see items like this coin, come out of the ground.CraigA wrote: Think of all the other finds and discoveries that have been found on the programme. I am sure that some of the sites they have discovered is more important than a single coin..............
Even though from an archaeological point of view, a defensive ditch may be of greater importance.

Offers to wash the coin with fresh water and remove soil with a clean toothbrush are refused by Helen Geake, the programme's specialist adviser. All she wants to do is preserve the coin until a time when professionals can take a better look at it.
Must be a different sort of gold that deteriates from a splashing of H2o.

We were up at Binchester Roman fort last week, where the curator was telling us about the dig that TT did there, around Easter time. He was saying that they made some very good finds .
He was also saying that the TT people hang on to all the finds, until after the programme is aired.

Anybody got any contacts in the national press? No disrespect to 'This is Derbyshire', but it would be great to get the story and TR quote out to a bigger audience, whether he was joking or not.
By the way, I reckon the chance of TR's words about the coin going out on the TT programme are about the same as the chance of Elvis landing on the Loch Ness Monster in the centre circle of Wembley at half-time during the FA Cup Final.......... But you never know, the discovery just might get aired with some positive remarks towards us detectorists.

Echoing BR comment, Doesn't the programme have specialists on site to evaluate the finds anyway??
Also Helen Geake, the programme's specialist adviser sounds like the 'No, your not touching it, its mine I tell you, mine!' kinda of girl
