If only the rivers had been dredged many of these floods would never happen.
Yes I know it would cause upset to a lot of fisher-people but, its through the rivers being kept the way they have been over many centuries that have made more floods around the country. Fish stocks would not fail, it would just take a few months for the river cycle to return to somewhat of a normal condition.
There are many ways this could be done but, it must be done.

Just a foot of dredging would cause less damage than leaving it as is, and giving so much disastrous outcomes to places in this country.

The city's cemeteries and crematorium were all closed due to extensive flooding.
Couldn´t light a fire if you tried.

We now have the Army in, sand bagging & trying to clear the water.

I'm on the high ground & unaffected.
:g34:
Only one road out of my village is passable & I'm not sure how far you can travel.
Local canal has burst it's banks, relatives house has a foot of water on the ground floor.

One of our Admin has been battling with flood water since early this morning.
Still lashing it down.

Got a small stream down our road. When i was knee high to a grasshopper during the late 70s and rarly 80s.
The then NRA used to clear the river out and cut back trees on a yearly basic. Every 3 or 4 yrs they used to dredge the river out but using a a small bulldozer on all the built up gravel and silt areas, plus widening the river in places.. Now they aint touched it for probably 20yrs and it's now totaly choked up.. In the past ten years or so, the hundreds of houses that have now been built upstream. Are now adding all that extra surface to this choked up stream.
I think it a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen.

house prices in low lying areas will drop, people will start looking at residences further inland or in higher elevations.

This is why its got to be done and kept up with it too...............How much will it cost to repair roads, pavements and so on to the cost of keeping the rivers clean and free flowing.............
