Re: Saxon relic worth up to £15,000
I remember a guy on here finding one more or less exactly the same as that a few years back, goes to show they're still some nice things to be discovered in the UK.

This is the same one Pete, it's been on going for a couple of years now, it's been disclaimed by the museum apparently.petethedig wrote:I remember a guy on here finding one more or less exactly the same as that a few years back, goes to show they're still some nice things to be discovered in the UK.
Tim, the finder is a friend of are's and a member of this site

There would have been a rod attached to the item and used to point at the words being read. They were used on pages that had the manuscript embellished with paintings which they did not wish to rub off with Friars Tucks fat greasy fingers Today we use the cheaper version of white cotten gloves
I have become comfortably numb

Re: Saxon relic worth up to £15,000
Here's an aestle I found on the University dig (on the spoil heap) that is the poor man's page turner and pointer. This one is a nationally important find and due to make its way to the BM any time soon. It's so rare that there is no parallel anywhere yet found.
It's 8th Century Anglo Saxon so an earlier version of the gold one though this one did have a gilt cover and probably an ivory pointer. It was the one find you'd want to discover when looking for an Anglo Saxon monastic site which we are at Berkeley in South Gloucs. There was once a double minster there (two churches), one we believe was for some nuns, who in the end were disbanded due to having a local lord having his lordy way with them all!!!!
If you do see another one of these on your travels please do contact me, cheers

Re: Saxon relic worth up to £15,000
Funny enough my first thought before the clump of dirt came off it when I found it on the spoil heap was that it was a key. The bottom section is conical and obviously empty. Like I said, nothing like it anywhere, and I have spent goodness knows how many hours looking
As far as I can see it is thus far a uniqute find, but it does have some very rich cousin's.......
1. The Alfred Jewel
2. The Minster Lovell Jewel
3. The Warminster jewel
4. The Yorkshire Aestle
