Online map descriptions unlock local history

Post by Puffin »

15 January 2013
Detailed descriptions for nearly 12,000 tithe maps of England and Wales from the 1840s are now available online, offering a greater insight into local history. Click Here

Tithe maps
Tithe maps can reveal a wealth of information about people, places and landmarks in Victorian times, including where famous individuals such as William Wordsworth lived. Village smithies, old turnpike roads, druidic altars and menageries are shown on the maps, as well as cotton mills and the first railways.

Rose Mitchell, Maps Specialist at The National Archives, said: 'The maps show the landscape at a time of great change, with industrialisation and urbanisation, but in some places little altered from the scene we see today.'

I have just spent the best part of half an hour on this web site and have to say it's one of the most complicated sites to navigate I've every come across!. Virtually nothing is available on-line, you can order documents (at cost) or get a 'Readers Ticket' which I'm in the process of trying to understand???

Puffin - how did you gain access to the site to view maps etc ? did you have to get a readers ticket ?
Swing till you drop...... if in doubt - DIG IT!!

I came across this via FB, its one of those works in progress and one which so far is patchy in coverage. I, like your self have been looking around it for a short while. At least you can see whats available in a given area using the map option, it has a lot of things going for it but like you say not the easilest site to get info out of?

The map search area.

Lets just put it down to the pair of us being thicko's :hahaha:

There is a facility to purchase 'tithe' information but it is unclear if your purchasing a map, information, or both ? they don't give a single example of what your paying for! a very ill designed web site in my opinion and severely lacking in several departments :g64: One of those sites that's full to overflowing with information but doesn't actually tell you much :g43:

Well I've been playing around on the site and found some info on maps......
http://labs.nationalarchives.gov.uk/wor ... /#more-720

Click the "get started" and move the map around to your area (drag mouse, zoom in & out) on the left hand side is a key to choices, check the boxes you want info on and there pop up on the map, once you find something interesting, click the icon on the map and it will go to that info page.
Hope this helps.

Edit:

Just seen this info......

Quote.....

You only need a reader's ticket to look at original documents, not copies of documents. Many of our most popular records, particularly those of interest to family historians, are available online, or on microfilm and microfiche. You do not need a reader's ticket to consult these records.

Obtaining a reader's ticket

You will only need a reader's ticket if you are consulting original documents. To obtain a reader's ticket you will need to register your personal details and complete a short online document handling information tutorial on any of the computer terminals in the reader registration room, located on the second floor. This should take you less than 15 minutes. Once complete, your reader's ticket can be collected from the registration desk in the reader registration room.

In order to receive your reader's ticket you must bring two forms of identity (listed below) with you, to prove both your name and address. If any of these documents are in a language other than English, you must bring an official translation.
We will take your photograph for the reader's ticket. The photograph must show your full head without any head or face covering. If you wear such items for religious or medical reasons, please speak to a member of staff.

Acceptable forms of identity

Proof of your name with valid signature:

Expired National Archives' reader's ticket issued after March 2008
Passport
Driving licence
Bank card
Credit card
National ID card
Police/Customs/Home Office/warrant card
Forces ID card
Sea/Air Masters licence
NUJ pass
Government/local council staff ID
Blue Badge (driver's pass)

Proof of your address:

All bills and statements must have been issued within the last three months. Internet printouts and online statements are not acceptable.

Utility bill
Bank/building society statement
Credit card statement
Council tax bill
Council payment book
Council rent card or tenancy agreement
HM Revenue and Customs statement
Passports with address (where the address has been officially entered by the issuing authority)
National ID card with address
Driving licence with address
Home Office permit to stay
University certificate for hall of residence (stamped and signed by institution)
TV licence
Firearms licence
Home insurance policy
International student photo card
Benefit agency book or original notification letter
Student Loans Company LEA/SAAS award letter

Renewing or replacing your reader's ticket

Readers' tickets are valid for up to three years from the date of issue. To renew a reader's ticket, you will need to show us proof of both identity and address.
Lost or forgotten tickets can be replaced for a charge of £5, upon production of proof of identity and address. Stolen tickets will be replaced without charge if you show the registration desk a police crime reference number and acceptable identification.

Thanks for putting this up Puffin but I have consigned my desk top icon to the bin now :g48: Thought for a minute I was onto a good thing. The low down is that you have to pay for each individual piece of information of which they don't even give you a taster! so you really don't know what your buying, and if you want to look at their severely limited resources online then you have to go to Surrey with a Readers Ticket and a copy of your entire life story with documentation, character witness and passport to view the information.... if your lucky :g42: Obviously this stuff they have is Top Secret and on a need to know basis. I just hope they don't have a 'read and destroy' policy in which case no one will get a copy of anything :g42:

Here you go omegamike,

" The tithe map CD-Rom's can also be purchased, now for only £15 per CD. The new Kent History and Library Centre is now open and CD's can be ordered by sending an email to historyandlibrarycentre@kent.gov.uk. Be sure to put "Order for Tithe Map CD" in the Subject line. "

I know most if not all local history centers will sell CD's of the local county Tithe Maps....

That sounds good, but it's unclear if it's just the one CD for one parish or one CD for all the Kent parishes? And exactly what do these maps look like, if they are indeed maps in the traditional sense of the word? Would love to actually see at least a part example of what I would be buying!
