Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
I've been experimenting with a TomTom One to see how it can be used to record find spots as follows;
To see the location of a findspot
Tap Help Me/ Where am I, this shows the GPS Co ordinates which can be written down.
To add a find spot as a Point Of Interest (POI)
First add a POI Category - Tap Change Preferences/Arrow Right/Manage POI's/Add POI Category.
Then to add a POI - Tap Change Preferences/Arrow Right/Manage POI's/Add POI/Choose Category/Arrow Right/My Location and give it a name.
To download the find spot to Google Earth
Connect the Sat Nav to your PC
Open the ov2 to kml converter on this link http://www.poieditor.com/poi_convert/ov2-to-kml/
Click on Browse/Computer/select the TomTom directory
Open The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland folder/locate the .ov2 file
Select convert to kml/then opening the file will open it in Google Earth Temporary Places
Handy for Copying the speed camera locations to Google Earth too!
Haven't tried the navigate to, could get a bit bumpy.

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
I have just found that by going into the map on my tomtom
I can go to options, which then gives me the option of showing the co ordinates of where I am.
So that solves that little problem,
Thanks Phil

I have an XL which I bought last year, so it might be worth trying.
Only problems being that it's a bit bulky to carry around in the field, and
battery life is limited.

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
Has anyone checked the accuracy of using a tom tom for find spots? I used mine yesterday and on getting home and checking it against google earth it is not very accurate, it tells you where you are on X lane 250 yards from Y lane, and a N degree and minutes and W degree,s and minutes
but if you check on the exact find spot you can be at the wrong end of the field or even in the wrong field It is much more accurate to pace out your find from hedgerows and transfer that to google maps. Using this link.

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
Ive just checked mine in the back garden Dave and it was accurate to 7 metres, it had aquired 7 satellites.
Did you give your Tomtom time to aquire as many satellites as possible before taking the reading?
Click on the screen, click change preferences, click on the right arrow & got to page 6, click on show GPS status. This shows how many satellites are aquired & updates the North & West co ordinates in real time.
I would welcome others going into their back garden or any identifyable spot on GE with Sat/Navs and comparing the reading with the GE map.
Anyone up for trying it?

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
I've set my Sat/Nav to decimal minutes (go to show GPS status & click on configure).
If your Sat/Nav co ordinates are say North 51deg 30.200mins and West 0deg 7.198mins then type N 51 30.200, W 0 7.198 into the 'fly to' box (top left) in Google Earth and click on 'search' and it will take you there.

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
Thanks for the distance reading Baza
I think they are fantastic, I used to spend ages planning a route to somewhere and having no one to read it to me in the car I had to keep putting my specs on and trying to read as I drove , and if you took a wrong turn you could get really lost. They even give you your journey time in advance

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
Interesting read,
no hijack intended phil,
seeing as it's Tom Tom related,
my 550 needs updating,it shows some roads as being 30mph max
but now they are 40,
a 60 mph road on the map,is now a 40 ,etc,
how do I get it up to date?
kev.

I've noticed that too on my Tomtom even though it updates when I connect it to my pc and download.
Maybe someone can help up both

Re: Using a SatNav (TomTom One XL) to GPS your finds
You need to down load the TomTom update program from the TomTom site Click Here. Register your unit. Then pay for the new maps. The software download is free, but the maps are third party. I've just done my maps, I paid for a years worth of map up dates. I know it was not much, about £30 odd. Sounds a lot but as I use my TomTom on a daily basis for work its well worth it. Also by logging in to TomTom via the program, you get the free user map updates.
I also update my speed camera files from PocketGPSworld.com Click Here on a weekly basis, £19.00 per year. If you report a new camera site and you are the first to do so, you get 25 years worth of free down loads. They also have a voice warning set of files. These give a verbal warning of a nearby camera with the known speed of that camera. IE "Gatso ahead 30mph".
Don't use the TomTom camera files, they are simply not uptodate.
Before you update your unit, please manually copy all of the files to your PC from your unit, this way if something corrupts, you can copy the duff file back to your TomTom.
