Looking for a detecting buddy in Essex!

Post by TerryW »

Heya chaps,

As a new detectorist I'm probably more than wet behind the ears and have no permission yet (although I've been in discussions with Natural England, have a Foreshore Permit and currently in discussions with a farmer to let me use his 40 acres) but I was wondering if anyone would be willing to spend a day or two detecting with myself so that I can gain a little experiance, some knowledge and hopefully learn how to use my new detector.

I can travel although only via public transport :/

Thanks

Hi Terry, is the coastline near Bradwell detectable? I seem to remember it being quite muddy?

Would be a cracking area with the Saxon church and Roman Fort just the other side of the sea wall.

Only problem would be the old bombing range, just off the coast on Western side of power station, you don't want to be digging up any 500 pounders.

I would try landowners in the area of the airfield/power station, if you can, as there is a very good chance of Roman and Saxon finds. Until you get permission stick with the coast line.

You live in a cracking area there Terry, good luck with your permission.

Aye, I'm planning on hitting the beaches fairly soon. Most likely will be heading up to Bradwell on Saturday to have a look around. Might take the family for a stroll or something. I just hope I can get the permissions :)

The permission will come, as will the finds.

Took me quite a few knock backs before I got my first farm, just don't give up.

I found doing a bit of research on the intended farm worked wonders. Taking old maps with you or details of crop marks in their fields helped win me permission.

If you haven't tried these, give them a look.

Masses of info there, should keep you busy?
