Newbie here

Post by Pepe »

Hello

Never done detecting before, but would like to get into it. I collect and restore Roman coins and love history. I have two questions:

1) What sort of metal detector is good for a newbie?

2) I live in Widnes and would like to know if there are any local clubs seeking new members nearby?

That's all for now. Thanks

North West clubs...... http://www.ncmd.co.uk/northwest.htm

Machine depends on budget......... £200 will get you a decent, basic new machine. £400 will get a better second hand....... as with any hobby contrary advice will abound, but if the stuff isn`t in the ground you will never find it !

Welcome aboard.

Welcome Pepe. Good advice there from J.C..

Don't allow yourself to become confused by a load of differing opinions on which detector is the best.

Have a look at some of the retail outlets, viewing both new and used machines. Based on what John
has already said, a Garrett Ace 250 will set you back a tad under £200 new, double your outlay, and
you will find a better machine, but, as a starter, I feel the 250 is a great way to go. It is light weight,
easy to set up, and learn your hobby with, very good value for money. I have owned one in the past.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

I have just put a bid on a Garret Euro Ace detector. I'll see how that goes. They seem about the right price range and quality for a rank amateur like me.

Thanks for the advice. :g50:

Well in, Graham. It's nice to know that there are other metal detectorists from God's little green acre here too. :beer

Welcome Pepe. This is a very good forum. I expect you are well aware but just in case you must have permission to detect on land
unless you have acres of your own? Written permission is usually advisable. T.D.
