Bang on Phil.
I've had the good fortune to find two hoards in 5 or 6 years of detecting.
The first one was on a pasture field which i thought i had "done", then they popped up in a spot which i had gone over having done a methodical search before. But going back for a wander they came up.
I suppose this could be even relevant on yearly cultivated fields.
I suppose you could assume though that my methodical search was perhaps poor, but that's my point. i thought i had done it.
Good thread and some good ideas.
Is it me or the field?

Good on you for persevering
It made me think of the last episode of detectorists where he walked away and the camera showed the underground view of the massive hoard lying below, if only he knew.

That was actually a stroke of genius by Mackenzie.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

If you are finding lead then you are still in with a chance of making decent finds. The fact that it is there in the first place denotes that the field has seen some usage. This is a positive sign. Not all finds turn up in the first or second session, so You just have to keep plodding on sometimes!
Professionally aimless wandering.
