Metal Detecting Insurance

Insurance is an important requirement these days especially with equipment costing such a lot of money. Even some of the beginners starter metal detectors cost upwards of £300.

Another requirement is that of Public Liability insurance which is required in case you become liable and can be sued for the cost of damage or injury caused. A typical scenario might be if you left a gate open and half a dozen sheep walked out on to the local road and caused a serious accident.

Equipment insurance is usually done through your Home contents insurance. get your detector and outdoor clothing covered usually under Sports Equipment and make sure that it is insured not only within your house but also when you take it out and away from your home. Most policies will allow cover for such things as bikes and other outdoor gear being stolen or damaged away from the insured premises.

Public Liabilty insurance for metal detector users is usually obtained from either one of the national bodies i.e. the N.C.M.D (http://www.ncmd.co.uk) or F.I.D. (http://fid.newbury.net/html/fid.htm). Both of these organisation include public liability insurance with their memberships and it is useful to join one or the other for this insurance as it is handy to have it to reassure a farmer or landowner when asking for permission and also because many metal detecting rally organisers are making it a requirement of attendance.
