Re: Detectorists against Green Waste Campaign!!
I've got the local councillor for the environment round here interested in it just now, he said he's happy to look into it with regards to what happens here in Bristol.
However...
Having looked at the petition, he said he's not entirely convinced it's a genuine issue, or at least an issue of policy. I mentioned that I'd heard farmers are paid to spread the green waste on their land, but he said that would make no economic sense as the landfill tax is set at a pretty low level right now. So why would people pay more to have farmers take it than it would cost to put it in landfill?
Anyone got any specifics on these sorts of things, or more info on whether the spreading of this waste is controlled by a council policy, as opposed to just being the sharp practice of a few dodgy but private companies?

Sound like a bit of spin to try and side step the issue to me.

Nah, this guy's been a friend of mine for a good few years now, and is well known as being pretty militant on environmental issues when he has a mind to be. He's also an academic though, so I guess approaches things with a skeptical mind at all times!

There are two ways that this so called 'green waste' is being dumped on farm land.
(i) As per the link in the first post. Certain companies (farmers) are being paid money to receive unassorted 'green waste'. They then compost the said waste, and either sell it back on, or spread it on their own fields.
(ii) Farmers who buy this 'green waste' which has already been composted. It is a very low grade compost, with all the 'nasties' still in.

Re: Detectorists against Green Waste Campaign!!
I have just recieved a letter off the Environment agency, they have spoke to my mp and have had DEFRA contact them over the contaminated Green waste, and wish to investigate it, thay are asking for particular specific sites the waste is on, i am calling them today to discuss a possable site visit to one field, i just hope the rubbish has not been ploughed in by the time they arrange a day.
this is where we need as much detail as we can on site locations.

just spoke to the E A and they have had some detail about the sites i know about and are now locating which of the 3 main staffs composters have been delivering to these sites, they are then going to have a site visit at the composters to see the process.
they are not going to involve the farmers but looking at the problem been caused by the composters.
Re: Detectorists against Green Waste Campaign!!
Well done Barney, sounds hopeful, I wouldn't worry about the waste being ploughed in, it will take more than a plough to bury that lot and the rain will help to wash it to the surface again.
