Hi Kev,

I think this clarifies the position. Unfortunately we can't change the wording on the petition - although if I could I probably would.

Hi All, Here is another follow up reply today....

"your district councillors for Headley, has copied me in on your exchange. His answers have been excellent. However there is still one matter about which I am not satisfied. In case you are not familiar with the way this all works, may I briefly explain how the County and the Districts interact.

Refuse and recycling is collected by District Councils. (Districts and Boroughs are the same). The disposal of refuse and recycling is the repsonsibility of the County Council. The County does this through a much admired scheme called Project Integra, generally considered to be the role model for the UK. A by product is, as you say, ProGrow.

Cllr. Williams has described the whole scheme very well. I am very conversant with the extremely high quality standards operated by Project Integra but despite that I am following up the remark in your email to Cllr. Williams that you feel there is a slight possibility that some refuse may have entered the ProGrow production process. Personally I doubt this very much. However when I have confirmation I will write to you again. It would be a very serious matter if it did in fact happen.

I should say that the disgraceful scenario described in your email below is one I do not recognise in any way for the county of Hampshire."

Hi treasurehunterste, I will ask your question to him when he writes back with his confirmation to me about ProGrow... :g50:

Thanks Lee.

You might also like to point out that he studies a report by Wrap.org.uk, published in July 2010, who quote

"Feedstock supply is also uncertain since the Hampshire composting market has been undermined by "shred and spread‟ operators taking green waste feedstock for a much lower gate fee and allowing it to be spread to land with minimal (if any) treatment".

Quite right Kev - and the problem we had last time was that the producers said it was certified pure green waste (good stuff) but when spread on the fields it was still full of plastic and metal (bad stuff).

Here a template to Countryfile, with email address. Just change the bit in red, to suit your yourself or add/remove anything you wish. It is there to help you. The more we bombard Countryfile, the more likely, they feature it. Thanks for the input from Liz and The Team, for the input on the letter.

Ms T Brogan,

Countryfile,

Birmingham,

teresa.bogan@bbc.co.uk

Dear Ms Brogan,

I am writing to you to bring to the attention of Countryfile a relatively new, but ongoing problem in our countryside with contaminated green waste being spread on farmland. Over recent years we have all seen the pressure on our councils to recycle green waste which, when done correctly is a very welcome idea, however many of the recycling companies are not screening the waste properly and the fields are becoming contaminated.

Within the green waste, metal (particularly aluminium) and plastic is being shredded into pieces and subsequently spread on the land, even more disconcerting are the cases where syringes, mercury and lithium batteries etc, are being found in quantities in the fields. These items, as you will be aware are non-degradable, and will be left in the ground for hundreds of years. In relation to the aluminium and mercury, there is a strong case, to believe it will get into our food chain. Sadly, it is often too late, when the farmer is made aware of the situation.

The RSPCA say that annually, they receive over 7,000 phone calls about litter-related incidents and their officers regularly rescue pets, farm and wild animals trapped or hurt by discarded litter. With many pet and farm owners going directly to vets, and many injured wild animals never being found, it is estimated that this figure is just the tip of the iceberg.

I am a father of three young children and the thought that now and particularly in years to come they will be eating food grown in these contaminated fields is truly appalling, it is a practice that needs stopping before it covers most of England.

I became aware of the problem through my hobby of metal detecting, but thought it was just a local problem. However after reading other peoples experiences on a forum, it was only then I realised that this is a national problem, I think if the general public were aware of what is in the fields that supply the food chain there would be a national outrage.

I have signed an e-petition, in an effort to stop this unscrupulous practice and to bring more accountability in way of fines etc., for these companies who are doing nothing less than ‘fly tipping’ in our countryside. After only five days of being 'live' there are close on 600 signatures. It can be viewed at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/30392

It may also interest you to watch a small video clip, of a farm in Staffordshire, with this "green" waste added to the soil.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

An added bonus. Under 18's can sign too. So please don't forget the kids - oh and partners, although I guess they'll be over 18. :g42:

Thank you for your message regarding e-petitions.

There is no bar to under-18s signing e-petitions. The only stipulation as to who can sign an e-petition, other than the citizenship/residency requirements is that we do ask that individuals who sign e-petitions use their own e-mail address when doing so.

Yours sincerely

Just got my three to sign up. Come on folks. Please lets not wait for the whole country to be under the stuff, before we act. Also if anybody else would like to join me and barny, to take on the wildlife forums/industry, can you please let me or Barny know - before we burn out. :g50:
