Pilgrim ampullas......a request
You may have seen the ampulla that I found last week and posted here on the forum.
Having started to research it's shape and design, I have found that this type seems to have a very localised distribution and I want to try and pinpoint where they were being made and sold. If I am right in my theory that they are very local, then I may write up and publish my findings
I would like to know if anyone here on the forum has ever found an ampulla of this shape and with this design on it..............
From the 14 others that I know about, the design appears to be like this, but many are worn so may be more difficult to interpret.
I would love to see more examples of these so that I can expand the database on them and maybe find a central location where the shrine was that issued them.
To protect peoples' sites, I am not looking for exact findspots, just a rough locality and any information can be PM'd and will be treated in strictest confidence.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Pilgrim ampullas......a request
This should get you going Tom, found nr Grimsby, from Mitchiner, Medieval Pilgrim and Secular Badges, (1986) No. 420, page 149.
Heraldic type, the scallop shell is indicitive of a general emblem of pilgrimage (rather than a specific reference to St James). Mitchiner has it down as 15thc.

So are you checking the heraldry Tom, that would make a very personal piece of history.

Have you seen this document Tom, it looks like it was made by the late Geoff Egan, it has a map of shrines in it and some info;

Kev Woodward and Cori go on there quite regularly. I know many others do too. Just sign up Tom. Time of good will and all that. You'd be more than welcome.tomredmayne wrote:Have to be a member to see it Garry..................don't think I'd be welcomed somehow.............

Here we go, apparently found near a Medieval Church but no mention of whereabouts.
