The button dates earlier than you suggested, this style is in use for other ranks from 1855-1871, for officers 1855-1863, I see Deepseeker has kindly supplied you a link with some unit history but always happy to fill in more if you want anything adding.

WW2 issue or to be more precise 1920-60. Before that they used the spelling of Welsh with the S rather than the C it also looks like it has the Kings Crown, which fits with the later period.
Cleverroonie- fab find. Not one I have come across and I'm sure it is a new unrecorded one. I'm currently suffering a power cut due to a car wiping out electric post this afternoon so no chance of studying the books in this light but I will get you some more on the unit and confirm whether this is a known type of new to the science!!
Thanks both for posting great to see them all

Hi again, yes I know of the unit they form part of the West Suffolk Volunteer units but I am not sure this button is known to them. Is there any chance you could post or PM a larger image for me?
Thanks

Tinners first. I believe it's to the 8th The (Kings Royal Irish) Light Dragoons. The unit had this name from 1777-1822. The style post 1810 is well known and is not this one so pre 1810 as I suspected is correct. The inspection report of 1768 states the units buttons were plain but by 1769 they were numbered. By 1784 a design that clearly is similar to yours is described as 'silver, with a lion harp and crown and number of the regiment, so I think we are looking at c1784-1810. I am going to ask some others with better knowledge than I if they have seen this exact type before, certainly a very unusual find and thanks for posting it.
IFB yours is to the Royal Artillery or indeed the Royal Horse Artillery. This design with the single cannon came in from 1873 and having a queens crown it pre dates 1901 so a fairly specific date range. The style of ball button is more commonly associated to horse/mounted units but prior to 1924 both the RA and RHA wore this style, for example on mess jackets.
Hope that helps and thanks for posting them.

Tinner, had it confirmed that my suspicions were indeed correct and this type isn't known for the unit so another new one that I will add to the website next week
