Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Ibat,
I am going to have to look into yours and see if there is any geographical hits that L could be that had a voluntary unit. The V will be for Volunteers and the L a place name. Leicesterhire has similar examples but will look into this one for you.
Tinner,
Your previous ones the Engineers button was from the period 1856-1901, the Naval ones I am not great with but one looks Vicky fashion, the other older and proper Naval issue.
Your 72nd today is another nice early one, which is for the other ranks and we can date 1800-1830 even though this design stayed in use until 1881. The unit was the 72nd (Highland) Regt of Foot until 1823, when they became the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) Regt of Foot and later merged with the 78th to become the Seaforth Highlanders.
Nice finds both of you!!
Cheers

Re: The Early Military Button project
The only local possibility for the LV is the 'Leeds Pioneers' (Volunteers) who were raised in 1804 and disbanded in 1808 serving under Captain Wade Brown & Lieutenant Samuel Lamb. That is not a definitive ID as there are other Leeds units but their patterns are largely already known.
Hope that helps

Re: Livery or ??
it looks like a local militia button to me, i have moved it to blue yetis thread so you are more likely to get an ID from him as he is the main man when it comes to this type of stuff.
Sometimes too much to drink is barely enough.

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Brian
Catch up on this thread... from your first post.
Top left is GPO- Post Office
Top right is The Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry
Last one is an other ranks button to the 71st (Highland) (Light Infantry) date wise from c1825-1871.
Your second message as Dioz has already stated is a livery button.
Cheers

Re: The Early Military Button project
Next one is Nicks
Its certainly appears to be to the 7th Regt of Foot - which is the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt) however this is not a design I m familiar with for them so am going to share it with a friend to see if I can get you a date positive ID.
Cheers
