Hi Tinner

Nice find. In short the forerunner of the Royal Army Service Corps. However in napoleonic times the military didn't have its own logistical units. Thus in 1799 the Royal Waggon Corps was formed who in 1802 had their name changed to Royal Waggon Train. They were disbanded in 1833 as being unecessary before being reformed for the Crimean war in 1855 as the Land Transport Corps and became the Military Train the following year.

Hope that helps

Is there an address we can post all our military button finds too (PM?) (being lazy I know but prefer to fill my cleaning and scanning time with lead seals ;) )
Tremendous web site by the way - a significant historical resource.
Found any lead bag seals? Email a piccy to me for inclusion on The Bag Seal Gallery Ourpasthistory.com Image Gallery :: Lead Cloth & Bag Seals

Wish i would find things like this in the shed!!

It's a circa 1800 design to the 31st Regt of Foot who at this time were the Huntingdonshire Foot. There was a slightly earlier design with a roped edge so this is the second pattern to the unit. The 31st when amalgamated in 1881 made up a battalion of the East Surrey Regt.

Nice early regular army find

Hi Tinner

must have missed replying to these two!

The 53rd dates from 1855-1881 when the 53rd Regt of Foot was the Shropshire Regt of Foot.

The second has the same design as the Royal Corps of Transport but they were not formed until 1965, so I am racking my brains to think of another unit hat used this design earlier!!

Hope that helps
