Re: The Early Military Button project
Apparently it's a family livery button.
The motto shown for the HAWLEY family is ET SUIVES MOY.... Click Here
...I've seen it spelt ET SUIVEZ MOY (as on the button) elsewhere.

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Tinner,
Indeed another nice early one.
Its to the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons who were in existence from 1751-1799 when they were disbanded due to the opinion they had performed poorly in service in Ireland and were thus 'unreliable'. They were reformed many years later (1861) as Lancers but the design of their button was very different then. Date wise this style runs from c1780-99.
Cheers

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Tinner
Nice finds as always
First up is the Royal Wiltshire Militia. The addition of the word Royal and style date it 1855-1881 when they made up the 3rd battalion of the Wilts Reg.
Next up is an other ranks issue to the 74th Regt of Foot, who didnt hold a county title 1816-45, which is when yours dates to (although could be as late as 1854). The Assaye honour dates to regiments participation in this battle in 1817 and they startd adding it to their button around 1820, so c1820-54 covers the dates. They later gained the Highlanders title and would later become the Highland Light Infantry.
Last one is the 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regt of Foot, other ranks wore this design from c1800-71.
Hope that helps

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi BY,
I found this mangled button this weekend, I believe it's from the 98th (Prince of Wales) Regiment of Foot as I understand the Regiment was originally raised in 1824 as the 98th Regiment of Foot, before assuming the title of the 98th (Prince of Wales) Regiment of Foot in 1876. Found within the Petworth, West Sussex area, any other information would be most appreciated?
Many thanks,
Lee

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi BY, Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Found this button the other day within the Godalming, Surrey area... I believe it belongs to the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot but as I understand the 39th was also at some point was the 39th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, I would love to be able to pin it down a little more?
Many thanks,
Lee

Re: The Early Military Button project
This one turned up today. The cannon is ship or fort type, not horse drawn.
