The online book "The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire V1" has a section that lists families and the location of Churches in West Riding where their Arms could be found. (The info was apparently sourced from the 1892 book "Heraldry in the Churches of the West Riding" by the Rev. J. Harvey R.Loom.) It shows that the Arms of Shuckburgh families were in churches at Ecclesfield, Brierley, and Wadworth, which are about 18, 13, and 5 miles, respectively, from Doncaster, so it seems Shuckburgh families were in the area where the button was found.Donnydave wrote:Yes Doncaster areaDiOz wrote:Was the button found near you Dave?

Re: Livery buttons
I think it's supposed to be a Duke's coronet.kev woodward wrote:Hi Pete, great to have you around again The coronet on this is bugging me, it looks similar to an Earls coronet but without the three balls on each 'spike', as the earls coronet only has one. Therefore, this is either a johnny foreigner coronet or just a made up pseudo crest. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find out anything
It may have been easier to make each "strawberry leaf" from "three balls".
I can't find the crest.

Re: Livery buttons
Arms of Shuckburgh families were also in churches at Dalton and Rotherham (9 and 12 miles from Doncaster).DiOz wrote:The online book "The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire V1" has a section that lists families and the location of Churches in West Riding where their Arms could be found. Re: Livery buttons
These are the families that use the crest (click on each name for more details) Click Here
The only one I can see that was an Earl (denoted by the earls coronet above the crest) is William Petty-Fitzmaurice, Earl of Kerry

Re: Livery buttons
Earl of Lansdown could be a possibility - as Bowood Estate is just outside of Chippenham - within a few miles of find spot.
Many thanks

Re: Livery buttons
No need for apologies Kev.....as it does look like it could be an Earl's coronet until compared with the button on UKDFD.

Re: Livery buttons
A member found this button in East Yorkshire, can anyone date the period it was made in please.
As far as I can tell it is a Clan Haigh button with a 'rock proper crest' and was made by W Armfield.

Re: Livery buttons
A correct ID Phil, plenty of family branches dotted around the country, although none I can find from Yorkshire. A late 19th early 20th century date judging by the back mark. It usually doesn't have just the W but Edw for Edward, but the letters before the W seem to not be there

Ignore anything you're already aware of.
Button maker E. and W. Armfield of Newhall Street in Birmingham, is listed in this 1831 publication... Click Here
Regarding the button being found in Yorkshire...the following is from the 1881 publication "The Haigs of Bermersyde" (in Scotland)....
YORKSHIRE BRANCH.
The Haighs of Longley, in Yorkshire, claim to be con-
nected by descent with the Haigs of Bemersyde, and they
have always carried the Bemersyde arms. The present
representative is George Henry Haigh of Longley and
Grainsby. .....Click Here
(The crest is on the arms at the start of the book.)
From Wikipedia.........
Emma-Jane Adelaide (1828–1919) married George Henry Haigh DL JP (1829–1887, Repton, Trinity College Cambridge) of The Shay, Halifax, and Grainsby Hall, Lincs in 1859. The Haighs were a fabulously wealthy family who had made their fortune in the industrial revolution (as mill owners, merchants and bankers) and were busy transforming themselves into the upper ranks of the landed gentry. Apart from owning huge estates in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire they also owned a large country house in Merionethshire called "Aber Iâ". ....Click Here
This HAIGH family are said to have no right to their arms........ Click Here (midway down on the left).
Myfamilysilver's example of the crest looks like flames...and the "clan Haig" crest is described but not pictured....and there's no mention of the Yorkshire/Lincolnshire Haigh family... Click Here
