Club Speakers

Post by jcmaloney »

As a fairly traditional Club we have guest speakers on history & numismatics on a bi-monthly basis and I`m currently planning next years Calendar.
However finding those willing to stand up and talk for 90 minutes to a room of 50 or so folk is becoming a more difficult challenge!!
So how about this fine forum collating a list of speakers, subjects & basic contact details and counties covered??

I think that's a very good idea. I've just been re-arranging our speaker for next Tuesday's club meeting, as the original ones have dropped out at the last minute. I have a roster of speakers that we've used before, but it's well worth having access to a list that one can search by region. I'll sort out some contact details and add them here.

We have had speakers at our club but I don't think I could add their names and contact details to a list without getting their prior agreement.

I could get my other half to attend one of your meetings and talk for 90 mins no problem but her subject matter will be nothing to do with metal detecting, more like yoga or pilates :hahaha:

Some of the ones that have given us talks at the club are;

The PAS FLO - talk on recording with PAS
- talk on detecting Roman coins.
The FLO can often advise on who in the organisation can give talks on their specific field of work.

Local Museum curator of numismatics - talk on early medieval coinage.

A noted Yorkshire numismatist - talk on medieval coins.

National Museum Finds Advisor for Iron Age and Roman coins - talk on Roman coinage.

Heslington project leader - talk on the metal detecting/archaeological survey at Heslington.

Battle of Fulford project leader - talk on the metal detecting/archaeological survey at Fulford.

None have wanted payment but we do offer a payment to a charity of their choice.

Hi JC, something which has just occurred to me, after my contacting the local council.

How about a talk on maps, and map reading, with TITHE maps being special. Where to go
to read tithe maps, and what they can tell us, what, if anything it may cost, etc.
I found out that my neighbour, who lives in a Manor house dating back to the 16/1700s, can
do so free, at the library, where they can be viewed on microfiche.

Modern maps are filled with a lot of information, such as latitude/longitude readings, I had no
idea with those until I started working in a job which would require a lot of house calls, often in
secluded areas, we never had SatNav in those days. The accuracy of modern maps can, in
many ways guide you to a location, easier than SatNav's, when you understand them. :g58:
Could be interesting. .
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.
