I am seeing a lot of comments from people saying that hem weights are now known to be buttons, and they had material around them then sewn onto garments I like to think the original idea of weighting down long dresses or curtains is a more plausible idea Some of the hem weights I have found are quite heavy and a few of these sewn down the front of a dress or jacket would be quite a
weight to be carrying Anybody got any thoughts on this, or better still pictures of them in use ?

Thank you John Winter for the mention of my whirlygig on the finds database, I notice they are still calling them hem weights ? unless they are serrated edge whirlgigs

Hi John I wonder if there is a mixture out there, some thinner ones lead buttons and the thicker more substantial hem weights Ged Dodd is one of those that insist's they are from clothe covered buttons

No I only recorded two on there 10390 and 14722

Mine is on the database..John,, So could be mine .
