Re: What is it worth now?
Thats great Marc.
I always thought that because in medieval times there was no econimy as such, inflation didn't change for many, many years.
But have a look on the scale and imagine the poor surf in the fields, and losing his hammered penny(his days wages).
Then jump to 2008 and it was like loosing 50 quid.
I bet he didn't want to face the wife when he got home.

In 2009, £100 0s 0d from 1265 is worth......
£51,000.00 using the retail price index
£1,180,000.00 using average earnings.........If only we could go back in time
Thought I'd put my James II Shilling on.........
In 2009, £0 0s 1d from 1689 is worth:
£0.60 using the retail price index
£6.84 using average earnings............not worth much for 320 years is it

Its just that It gives a new perspective on finding coins that someone lost decades ago, and just how much the loss would have meant to them.
A well found and interesting site Marc

I've often thought if someone in the future would do the same for our coinage?..........I can see all metal coins being taken over by plastic or even an eye scan or finger prints to pay for things, never know what life would be like in 100 years.....hope they can cure the common cold!

Re: What is it worth now?
I've used this site for a while and have been particularly interested in converting probate values from my ancesters wills into current values.............
Seems to me that the values given in todays terms are well over exaggerated. My opinion..........
None of my ancestors within the propate range available on ancestry.com were anything more than working class, artisans, yet their propate worth using this calculator makes them out to be quite wealthy. Maybe they were, but it hasn't come my way

I managed to search back to the 8BC on my wife's side and there are a lot of Danish/Swedish kings, queens, preachers, judges and a lot in office but, like you, no one left a bean ........in our case its work to you bleed and scrape by the best you can....at least we appreciate money........sometimes better off that wayscratchiemm wrote:I've used this site for a while and have been particularly interested in converting probate values from my ancestors wills into current values.............
