Which entry DSLR

Post by Karv »

...hours of reading later, my brain hurts, but not as much as my wallet will.

I'm leaning towards the canon 1100d with 18-55mm IS lens, but just looking now for anyone who would like to add any more to my confusion or reading list before I finally commit.

I think a 550D is just out of budget which is a shame, but hoping a good deal will pop up before I get carried away ;)

Fire away, learned photgrapher types :)

Simple, save as much as you can before jumping into the DSLR market. The 550 is a great camera, if you go for a cheaper lower pixel camera body your will end up regretting it . Once you have the body, lenses are like coils, they expand the range of the body.

'er indoors has agreed the additional funding on a 550D, just hunting them down now as the price seems to have been a lot lower recently (~490) compared to 600ish.
I did nearly get tempted by a 500d and twin IS lens kit, (18-55 and 50-200) but hmmm... I don't know enough to know if thats a really smart move or not.

The 18-55 is the bog standard kit lense, a reasonable all rounder for most shooters. I'd hold off buying other lenses until you know a bit more of what you want to do with the camera. I use the 18-55 most of the time including finds photos at the 55mm end. 18mm is the wide angle landscape end of this lense. the 50-200mm is a cheap basic zoom and may disappoint you in the long run. I ended up paying just as much for my 300mm zoom as I did for my camera body and 18-55.

From what I've been hearing about the 550d it is a great camera, you will love it. Forgot the pre programmed modes and stick to AV and TV, this will give you more creative control.

I would not wait too long before buying, rumour has it, prices will climb because of shortages coming from Japan, the earthquake has damaged a number of parts suppliers factories.

Hi Karv, I think that on top of any discount you can currently get with this 550D camera. If you send your receipt to Canon they are running a £30 cashback promotion currently on this model..

I would check this if you buy one.

Good Luck :g50:

I did that on my 450d, £30 cash back. You pay the asking price, send the receipt off to Canon and a cheque came back within the month.

I got 7% off at currys (they'd already dropped(?) it to 599, so that was 557, then 30 back so 527. I've watched some refurbs go for more than this on fleabay today.

Just waiting for the postman now :)

Held off bidding on or buying anything else for fear of divorce, spent the day making the rear jungle into a pleasant garden instead, to win some brownie biscuits from 'er indoors.... :D
