More Kite Photography.

Post by Puffin »

I've been experimenting with a Wireless video down link from my kite Camera rig. This way I can aim the camera rather then just hoping I got the shot. Surprisingly simple to set up. The Point, Press and Pray camera is your starting point, they come with a USB to video out phoneo lead. This is connected to a 2.4GHz video transmitter which works off a standard 9v battery. Then the receiver is a bog standard baby video monitor, range line of sight 100m, which is more then enough to do what I want it for. All it takes is 1/2 hours worth of soldering to change and shorten the leads and plugs to fit.

Once I'd put it together on my rig I took it for an hours test flight.

A local canal junction at a place called Pelsall Wood. Before I would just estimate where the camera was in relation to the ground and get it wrong a lot of the time. Not now. I manage to position the Kite and rig between some trees and a canal sign to get the bridge image. The only down side, you have to keep half an eye on the kite, the rig, the line winder in your left hand, the ground around you so you don't trip up and the monitor in your right hand. Multi tasking or what!

Saying that pops, I picked up a battery strobe light from a cheap shop the other day. :g39: :g62: You can get kites with LED's sown in to the fabric. :g58:

There are a few possible options Steve. Radio Control from the ground, combined with video down link. You can point the camera just where you want it and even trigger the shutter. But that would require a bit of spondolicks to set up. A better camera would help as well, but the gamble of sending £500 into the air with the possibility of dropping it from a great hight has me twitching. A fellow KAPer has recently dropped a NEX5 in the drink when his kite dived. The only thing to survive was the memory card!!!!

Been playing again, I've added a remote IR trigger unit to my kite photo bag, this is an interval meter. A small box with an LED that you can adjust to flash at regular intervals firing the camera. I converted my DSLR Canon's video out lead so that I can also see the cameras preview LCD screen from at least 100m away on the baby monitor. A slight adjustment to the rig to balance everything and I have a working DSLR KAP rig. The only problem now it weighs 1.4kg, so I'll have to wait for a very good wind to fly it. :g49: :g37:
