Lighting for finds photos.

Post by Puffin »

Got dragged away from doing the norm today, went to Birmingham city centre. Discovered that the old Jessops city centre shop has reopened. So I took a good look around, their stock list has more the trebled. I spotted this product http://www.jessops.com/search?q=5262366 an LED attachment that will light up a room or a find in macro for a compact camera. Not illustrated is an attachment arm to link any camera and light together via tripod screws, provided. Just angle the light to the object for best effect. Still playing, but will post images when I get a chance. £12 and the results so far are good.

I never use flash, I find that I get better results using natural light. I get my subjects on a table near to a window and use a cork mat so it is a non reflecting background. I get as near to the subject as I can without casting a shadow over it, and find that the light coming from an angle shows the detail perfectly. The most important thing is to have your camera on a tripod and use a remote shutter release if you can as camera shake ,even the slightest will make the shots blurred. By using a tripod and good natural light you can keep the ISO down so giving the subject a fine grain which can then be enlarged on your PC. Having the right setting for the type of light is also important as you can see by some of the results of silver coins that crop up looking more like gold.
Good luck with your results .

Hi Puffin, that looks like a good piece of kit. Any idea on the price of the mounting bar please ?

Its included with the lighting unit John. The tripod is an Aldi one, but I'm sure you can get similar types very cheaply. I often have to photograph our clubs find of the month winners at an evening meeting and the lighting is never brilliant in the meeting rooms. I've been looking for a suitable way to illuminate them. Flash is way to hard on the image quality. This unit produces a soft diffused white light.

Better results from mounting the light on a second tripod and reducing the distance to the object from the camera lens. Mounting the light on the second tripod allows you bring out details by moving the shadows.
