Any local clubs Dave? if so try and get in touch with them and see if there's any vacancies. If you start asking at farms find out the name of the farmer and ask for permission a field rather than the farm. (field 1st farm later) try the reference section in your local library for interesting areas to search,in mine early days I looked at the old archeological bulletins right ups for Roman pottery scatterings etc. (any arable land near the old churches are always worth a look if you can get permission)

Thanks Rich-t , great advice , no local clubs near me , like the idea of the library , have emailed local council about places and they said NO , so it looks like looking for fields and testing the machine out on the beach for now.
Cheers

The South-Lancs and Cheshire are your nearest club - they meet in Widnes on the first Wed of the month !!

Hi Dave, and welcome to our great hobby. I too have a 400i, and must tell you,
it is not suitable for beach detecting, although you may have a little success on the
dry sand at the top of the beach. Good searching.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.
