Hi Weeman, and welcome aboard.
Your best bet is to find a club nearby, and join it, where you will meet folk with the same interest, plus experience, who will be glad to take you detecting.

Re: Newbie NW area
Hello again John, just to ask, what machine do you have at present ? Reason for asking ?
There is a wide difference between inexpensive, and CHEAP. The latter often implies
poor build quality, with all which goes with that. The other says, you got a good bargain
priced machine.
Don't be afraid to ask for advice about anything detecting related, we
have a great bunch of gals/guys on UKDN who love to help fellow detectorists.

It's a hello from me too John - good luck up there and I hope you can meet up with someone to show you the ropes and get you started. Not sure what detecting clubs there are near you but that might be the way to go.

Re: Newbie NW area
I was running a Garrett ACE400i, which was a good, easy to use, lightweight machine. I am currently without a detector, but hope to have a new one quite soon.
